Civics Class Visits the Legislative Assembly of Ontario 

“The best way to understand democracy is to see it in action.”  

Civics and Citizenship course recently visited the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto to explore how government works and how citizens can actively participate in shaping society. 

During the visit, students had the opportunity to tour the historic building, observe where laws are debated and passed, and learn about the different roles within Ontario’s parliamentary system. Through interactive discussions and guided activities, they discovered how ideas move from proposals to official legislation — gaining a first-hand understanding of how democracy functions in practice. 

The trip connected directly to classroom learning on civic engagement, rights, and responsibilities. Students reflected on the importance of informed participation, collaboration, and respectful dialogue in building a strong and inclusive community. 

For many, this experience brought lessons from the textbook to life. By seeing the government in action, students deepened their appreciation of citizenship and the value of contributing to society as informed and active members of their community.
